Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in the western section of the district. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Allegedly took elderly woman’s car

A 22-year-old West Lawn man was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle after he was arrested in the 6100 block of South Pulaski at 6:13 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22.

Juan Pablo Macias, of the 6100 block of South Keating, allegedly took a vehicle from a 70-year-old woman a short distance from where he was apprehended, a CPD spokesman said without elaborating.

According to public records, Macias was arrested at 63rd and Kolin in September 2018 and charged with carjacking.


Charge woman with defacing light pole

A 20-year-old woman from Shorewood, Ill. was charged with criminal defacement of property after she was arrested on the street in front of 6411 S. Austin at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11.


Michelle Bolanos was reportedly spotted using a marker to deface a light pole. A CPD spokesman was unable to say if what was scrawled on the pole was gang-related or not.





Man charged with retail theft again

A 32-year-old West Englewood man was charged with retail theft after he was arrested at the Jewel-Osco at 54th and Pulaski at 7:39 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14.

Steve Giles, of the 2000 block of West 69th Street, allegedly tried to steal merchandise from the store but was apprehended, a CPD spokesman said without elaborating.

A charge of assault was added after Giles allegedly grabbed a bottle of liquor and swung it at (but missed) a 20-year-old security guard.

According to public records, Giles has been arrested 14 times by CPD since 2016 on such charges as retail theft (five times), armed robbery, carrying a weapon on a CTA vehicle, aggravated assault, criminal trespass to land and criminal trespass to state land.


Charge woman with cutting man’s hand

A 32-year-old Clearing woman was charged with domestic battery after she was arrested at 63rd and Major at 5:27 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14.

Candice Loretta Klimczak, of the 6200 block of South Massasoit, allegedly used a knife to cut the hand of a 56-year-old man during an argument.

A CPD spokesman said the crime occurred in a home in the 6100 block of South Major, and that Klimczak ran away down an alley. She was apprehended by officers responding to a “domestic disturbance” call. She also was charged with harassment by telephone, although the spokesman did not elaborate.

According to public records, Klimczak has been arrested three times since 2015 on charges that included retail theft and battery.





Charged with kicking bus window

A 57-year-old Sleepy Hollow man was charged with criminal damage to property after he was arrested in the 4500 block of West 47th Street at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17. 


Efrain Guzman, of the 4300 block of South Keating, allegedly damaged a window on a CTA bus when he kicked it, a CPD spokesman said with elaborating.


He bit my hand, woman tells police

A 36-year-old Clearing man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 5900 block of South Rutherford at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17. 


Jose L. Serrano allegedly bit the hand of a 36-year-old woman during an argument.





Bust man on ‘armed habitual criminal’ rap

A 38-year-old Scottsdale man was charged with being an armed habitual criminal after he was arrested in the 8500 block of South Central Park at 5:44 pm. Wednesday, Aug. 18.
Arthuro Martinez


Arthuro Martinez, of the 8600 block of South Knox, was apprehended by officers responding to a “shots fired” call near the Grand Trunk railroad tracks. A CPD spokesman said officers found a gun on Martinez.

According to public records, Martinez has been arrested six times by CPD since 2014 on charges that included criminal defacement of property, criminal trespass to property, criminal trespass to a vehicle, aggravated assault of a peace officer, aggravated DUI, aggravated fleeing, unlawful use of a weapon, driving on a revoked license and reckless conduct.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections, Martinez is currently on parole and has convictions going back to 2002 for burglary, theft, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle.




Accused of punching woman in the face

A 65-year-old Ashburn man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 7900 block of South Christiana at 12:34 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. 


Arthur Nevarez allegedly punched a 63-year-old woman in the face several times during an argument, a CPD spokesman said.


Man allegedly refused to leave CTA land
Jercobie Funches


A 40-year-old man from suburban Park Forest was charged with trespassing on CTA property after he was arrested at the Orange Line terminal, 4612 W. 59th St., at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10.

Jercobie I. Funches allegedly ignored repeated orders to either board a bus or train or leave the premises, a CPD spokesman said.

According to public records, Funches was arrested by CPD in October 2019 at a dollar store at 93rd and Western and charged with retail theft.



Claim man violated order of protection
Fernando Salgado



A 41-year-old West Lawn man was charged with violating an order of protection after he was arrested at his home in the 6500 block of South Keating at 4:13 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14.


Fernando Salgado was apprehended after he allegedly banged on a door and demanded to be let in, a CPD spokesman said without elaborating.


Claim man molested girl in 2011
Cesar Rodriguez



A 35-year-old West Lawn man was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse after he was arrested at his home in the 6200 block of South Keeler at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12.


Cesar Rodriguez allegedly molested an 8-year-old girl a decade ago in a home in Brighton Park, a CPD spokesman said without elaborating.





Claim man drove drunk, caused crash
Luis Correa



A 23-year-old North Side man was charged with aggravated DUI, driving while using a cellphone and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after he was arrested in the 7100 block of South Cicero at 9:33 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14.


Luis F. Correa, of the 1700 block of West Thome, reportedly was the driver of a vehicle that caused a three-vehicle crash. Correa also was cited for driving on a license that had been expired for more than a year.






Arrest driver on DUI rap
Tomas Montes



A 55-year-old West Lawn man was charged with DUI, as well as illegally transporting open alcohol, after he was arrested during a traffic stop at 71st and Pulaski at 9:02 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19.


Tomas Montes, of the 3900 block of West 68th Place, was driving a vehicle curbed by police who said he ran a red light at 75th and Pulaski. He also was cited for driving an uninsured vehicle.


Claim man carried pellet guns
Mahmoud Nasir


A 34-year-old man from Decatur, Ill. was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a replica firearm after he was arrested during a traffic stop in the 4300 block of West 57th Street at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.

Mahmoud S. Nasir was apprehended by police responding to a “person with a gun” call. A CPD spokesman said Nasir was found to be in possession of two pellet guns. 

According to public records, Nasir was arrested by CPD near 28th and Pulaski in November 2019 and charged with driving on a suspended license.





Say man violated order of protection
Carlos Seija


A 29-year-old West Lawn man was charged with violating an order of protection after he was arrested in the ALDI parking lot at Archer and Harlem at 10:02 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11.

Carlos Seija, of the 3900 block of West 70th Street, was apprehended by officers responding to a report of women fighting in the parking lot. One of the women at the scene was a 22-year-old woman who has a order of protection relating to Seija, a CPD spokesman said, adding that while Seija was arguing with the woman, she made police aware of the order.

According to public records, Seija has been arrested seven times by CPD since 2019 on charges that included domestic battery, assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, illegal possession of ammunition and unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member.









Charged with domestic battery
Jasson Quito


A 23-year-old Garfield Ridge man was charged with domestic battery after he was arrested at his home in the 5700 block of South Meade at 2:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13. 

Jasson Nivaldo Quito allegedly slapped a 24-year-old woman in the face during an argument and also allegedly pulled her hair, pushed her down and stomped on her chest, a CPD spokesman said.

According to public records, Quito was arrested by CPD last October near Chicago and Ashland and charged with DUI, illegally transporting open alcohol and driving despite never having been issued a license.
