Matthew Salinas Working to Earn the Eagle Scout Rank

A Garfield Ridge Boy Scout is looking for help with his Eagle Scout project.
Matthew Salinas, 15, is looking for as many as 30 volunteers to help clean up three separate five-mile stretches of Forest Preserves trails.

The trails are located in the greater Willow Springs area. Salinas chose his project because he is interested in nature conservancy and because he ran the trails as a cross-country runner.
A student at the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora, Salinas hopes to be an astronaut one day.
He is a member of Troop 810, sponsored by Our Lady of the Snows Parish.
Trail clean-ups are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9; Saturday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 6. If inclement weather occurs on the October dates, the clean-up will be moved to Saturday, Oct. 23. Each clean-up should last several hours.
Bottled water, snack bars, vinyl gloves, pointed sticks to stab and grab litter, and plastic trash bags will be provided.
Volunteers are advised to dress for outdoor conditions and bring a brown-bag lunch.

In addition to donations to time, volunteers are needed to make monetary donations to purchase cases of bottled water, snack bars, vinyl gloves, plastic trash bags, cans of insect repellant and a first aid kit.
Donations may be made via checks payable to BSA Troop 810.
After the trail clean-ups are complete, Salinas will need to summarize and present his project to a committee of adults who will evaluate it and decide whether he becomes an Eagle Scout, Boy Scouting’s top rank. It is a feat accomplished by less than 10% of Scouts.
