Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in the western section of the district. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

West Side man charged with attacking police officer
A 19-year-old West Side man was charged with aggravated battery after he allegedly hit a
police officer in the face at the Chicago Lawn (8th) District police station, 3420 W. 63rd St., at about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 11.
Christopher D. West, of the 3300 block of West Flournoy, was at the station after a traffic stop about an hour earlier in the 5600 block of South Central. Police said he was driving a vehicle without a valid driver’s license or proof of insurance.
Police said that while at the station, West “pushed past officers, refused to follow verbal direction and struck an officer in the face, causing a laceration. [West] then attempted to strike a second officer. He was subdued and charged accordingly. The officer was treated and released from an area hospital.”

Charge man with stealing mail cart
A 36-year-old Garfield Ridge man was charged with theft after he allegedly stole a mail carrier cart in the 6100 block of South Archer at about 1 p.m. Thursday, July 5.
Dominic T. Seropian, of the 6200 block of South Archer, was apprehended after a 51-year-old mail carrier claimed he stole the cart and the mail in it, police said.
Police declined to say whether the mail cart was a U.S. Postal Service cart.
Bust two in connection with home burglary
A 20-year-old Englewood man and a 17-year-old boy were charged in connection with the
burglary of a home in the 3900 block of West 75th Place on the morning of Tuesday, July 3.
Daniel Bryant, of the 7000 block of South Normal, and the teen were arrested on July 8 in the 6900 block of South Normal by Englewood (7th) District tactical officers at approximately 12:35 p.m.
The subjects were identified by police following the dissemination of a surveillance video via media outlets, according to a CPD statement.
Police did not say if the property reportedly taken in the burglary was recovered.
Bust South Sider on weapons charge
A 30-year-old South Side man was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after a traffic stop in front of 4639 S. Cicero at 2:13 a.m. Sunday, July 8.
Lemonndell Bryant of the 7600 block of South Morgan, was taken into custody after he was found to be carrying a pistol in his pocket, police said.
They added that Bryant has a valid FOID card, but not a conceal carry license.
He also was ticketed for several traffic offenses.
Charge Central Stickney man with garage burglary
A 52-year-old Central Stickney man was charged with burglary after he allegedly entered a
garage in the 5100 block of South Lavergne on Friday, July 13, rummaged through a vehicle inside and stole three duffel bags containing assorted auto repair and emergency-related items, as well as tools.
William Richardson, of the 4700 block of South Long, was apprehended at the scene.
The victim, a 34-year-old woman, told police that her home security camera captured images of the crime and alerted her via cellphone—which she reportedly shared with police.
Boy pushed, robbed of cellphone
A 14-year-old Ashburn boy was robbed of his cellphone as he walked down a sidewalk in the 8000 block of South Kedzie at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 11. The teen told police that someone walked up and asked to use his cellphone. When the boy refused and said he had to get home, he was pushed to the ground, causing a cut to his knee. The offender grabbed his phone and fled. The police report contained no description of the robber.
Burglars leave Dollar Tree cashless
Burglars used bricks to smash their way into the Dollar Tree store at 5101 S. Cicero and steal three cash drawers before fleeing. The crime was discovered by a store manager arriving or work just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11. Security-camera footage showed that two burglars committed the crime. One appeared to be a black man or boy wearing a black shirt, black pants and black gym shoed with white soles. The manager told police that the stolen drawers contained no cash.
Asphalt co. hit by burglars
Burglars broke into a trailer on the grounds of the Reliable Asphalt Corporation, 3741 S. Pulaski, and stole several tools. The crime was reported to police by an employee, a 48-year-old man, at 7:06 a.m. Monday, July 9.
Another woman busted in sweep of Cicero Ave.
Another woman has been arrested in what appears to be a police sweep of streetwalking sex workers and others on Cicero Avenue, north of Archer—since CPD Supt. Eddie Johnson publicly vowed to the Archer Heights Civic Association that he would lead the way to eliminate prostitution for good in that area.
• Charged with soliciting a ride on the public way was 22-year-old Molly A. Swajanen, of Chattam, Mich.
According to police, at about 7:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10 in the 4900 block of South Laporte, she was “walking and soliciting a ride from passing vehicles…[she then] entered a vehicle and was apprehended.”
