Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A central air conditioning
unit was stolen from the rear of Ashburn Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8300 S.
Homan. The crime was discovered at 9 a.m. Friday, April 10 by a 68-year-old
woman and reported to police three days later.

A burglar forced his way into
an apartment near 63rd and Austin and stole a white metal necklace
with a white metal angel pendant, worth about $500. The crime was discovered by
the victim, a 35-year-old man, when he came home at 2:45 p.m. Friday, April 17
and saw pry marks on his front door and the blinds drawn. He told police that
as he entered the dwelling, he heard the back door slam shut, as the burglar
fled. The police report contained no description of the offender.

A 24-year-old West Lawn man
told police that he was robbed in his car near 47th and Springfield
at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, April 19. The victim said he was driving on 47th Street when he was flagged down by a
pedestrian, who asked him for a ride. The man agreed, but when the woman got
in, her accomplice—a man—also entered the vehicle, stealing $60 cash from the
center console and snatching a cell phone from the victim’s hands. Both
offenders then fled on foot. They were described as a black woman age 24,
5-foot-2 and 110 pounds, long hair, medium complexion, wearing a black jacket;
and a black man age 33-37, 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, bald, dark complexion,
wearing a red jacket.

Burglars forced their way
into a vacant home near 68th Place and Central Park and stole a
microwave oven and kitchen cabinets. The crime was discovered at 9 a.m.
Thursday, April 16 by a representative of a Coral Gables, Fla. loan company,
which owns the foreclosed property.

A burglary was thwarted when
a 34-year-old woman inside a house near 68th and Keeler frightened
two would-be home invaders. The crime occurred at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April
15. The woman told police that she heard one offender attempting to pry open the
side door, while the other was on a cell phone, acting as a lookout. When she
made noise, they fled on foot. They were described only as young Hispanic men
about 5-foot-5, wearing dark clothes.

Burglars broke through the
basement window of a home near 67th and Karlov, entered and stole
assorted jewelry, as well as a black Northface jacket. The crime was discovered
by the victim, a 64-year-old woman, when she came home at 10 a.m. Wednesday,
April 15.

A 28-year-old Vittum Park man
told police that burglars forced open the overhead door on his garage near 50th and Lamon and stole his lawnmower. He discovered the crime just after midnight
Monday, April 13.

An alarm apparently
frightened off a man who attempted to burglarize an apartment near 43rd and Kedvale at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 13. The victim, a 19-year-old man, told
police there were pry marks on a rear door. Surveillance video indicated that
the offender was a Hispanic man age 20-25, 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, bald with a
light complexion.
