Best Christmas Decorations to Be Hailed By Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch

As members of the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch make their usual
rounds this Christmas season in police Beat 811 (Garfield Ridge, west of Central Avenue), they will be looking for more than the usual crime-related concerns---they will be looking for the best holiday decorations.

“One way to fight crime is to promote neighborhood pride and beautification,” said GRNW President Al Cacciottolo. “We have done exactly that in the past year, and this Christmas decoration contest is a continuation of that.”

From now until Christmas Day, GRNW members on patrol will identify the “best dressed” homes and businesses in Beat 811, take photos and then vote among themselves to determine the top decorations.

Three winners will be chosen, and prizes will be awarded shortly after Christmas. The prize package will include free pies, courtesy of the Fasano Pie Company.

The contest is sponsored in part by Chicago Glass Blocks and Best Home Insulation, two local, family-owned companies saluted earlier this year by the GRNW for their ongoing role in improving the beauty, comfort and value of Garfield Ridge homes and businesses.

“Garfield Ridge is one of the best places in all of Chicago to live, work and raise a family,” stated Carol Basic, owner of Chicago Glass Blocks. “We salute the neighborhood watch for launching this fun Christmas contest, and we look forward to seeing the winners.”

A video of the best Christmas decorations will be made and shared online by the Southwest Chicago Post.

For more details about the GRNW, visit garfieldridgenw.com.

In the meantime and to help get us all in the Christmas spirit, check out this brief but fun video, shot at various Southwest Side locations by SWCP videographer Mary Hadac late on Christmas Eve 2012. (She finished shooting minutes before midnight and then edited it on Christmas Day.)

Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

An 82-year-old Garfield Ridge woman was swindled out of more than $1,500 cash by two thieves posing as Water Department employees. The men came to the woman's house near
52nd and Nottingham at about 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 18 and said they needed to enter her basement to read the water meter. The thieves had no identification other than work vests, but the woman concluded they were legitimate and let them in.

While she was in the basement, one con artist ran the water in a basement sink (in an apparent attempt to muffle the sound of the other thief rummaging through the first floor of the home). After they left, the victim said she discovered $45 cash missing from her purse and $1,500 cash missing from her chiffonier.

The woman waited over 24 hours to notify police, because she said she was dumbfounded by the crime. Her description of the criminals was vague. She said they were both white men, with one described as Irish or Italian.

They recovered a hammer from the scene, although it was not clear which individual hit her with the tool. The victim refused medical attention and left the scene before police could question her further.

Regular Folks Give Thanks to Veterans at Fifth Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive

Hundreds of military veterans came to the Des Plaines Valley
VFW Post 6863 in Summit today to receive free groceries, as well as a pat on the back and even blessings from a minister--all part of the Illinois Motorcycle Freedom Run's Fifth Annual Veterans Food Drive.

According to founder/organizer Mike Cozzi, this year's drive will feed nearly 700 veterans for Thanksgiving with not just a turkey, but bags of groceries donated by a number of businesses and individuals.

The event has grown every year, Cozzi observed, saying that the first year's goal was to feed 15-20 vets but wound up providing food for 109.

A small army of about 300 volunteers of all ages, grade school students to retirees, helps make it all happen--everything from people sorting, assessing, packing, driving, greeting and much more.

Cozzi was inspired to launch the annual drive when he saw the plight of veterans. "It amazed me that veterans who are returning from service overseas were unable to find work, were struggling to provide the bare necessities," he said.

He added that the drive typically serves "veterans who are unemployed or on some other kind of hardship," he said.

Some of the vets “wonder how we got ahold of them because they thought they were forgotten. These are individuals who have struggled all along and are living off their disability [checks] or Social Security or retirement from the military, and that’s what they’re limited to. To be able to do something like this, to have such a magnitude of support from the community so we’re able to provide an extensive meal for them, really means a lot.”

We at the Southwest Chicago Post tip our cap to everyone who volunteered and/or assisted in any way to bring a little sustenance and a lot of brightness into the lives of veterans in need this Thanksgiving, and that includes the Des Plaines Valley VFW Post 6863 for once again donating the use of their facility---which, we are told, meant forfeiting a Friday fish fry, a lucrative event for the post.

Some people are good at giving lip service to veterans; but at 63rd and Harlem today, where the rubber meets the road, hundreds of regular folks proved that they'll never forget and are grateful for the sacrifices made by veterans.

Want to help with next year's efforts or other worthy causes? Check out ILMFR.org today.

Byrne School eighth graders (from left) Angelica Kalafut, Kyra Geissler, Eve Stromidlo and Emily Dryden were among the many volunteers who assisted in the effort to bring food and good cheer to veterans this Thanksgiving.
