Hale Theatre Company Sets Three-Play Lineup for 15th Annual Fall Festival

Just sharing a press release from the Hale Theatre Company. Sounds like some great local theater!

The Hale Theatre Company presents its 15th Annual Fall Theatre festival this September.

Three amazing plays will be presented over three weeks at

the Hale Park Fieldhouse, 6258 W. 62nd Street.

Opening this year's festival is the dramatic comedy "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, September 12-14, directed by Michael J. Murphy.

The second production of the festival is "The Maids", a quirky comedy written by Jean Genet, September 19-21, and directed by Dr. Kevin McSweeney, Artistic Director of the Munroe Park Theatre Guild.

Closing the festival is a bright and happy comedy, "The Hallelujah Girls", written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, and is performed on September 26-28. The show is under the direction of Lauren J. Polenske, Artistic Director of The Hale Theatre Company.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the Hale Park Fieldhouse Monday-Fridays from 2-7pm, and at the box office on the day of performance. To reserve tickets, call 773-229-1032 and ask for Michael or Lauren.

Crime News Update

Three people were shot after an argument at El Palenque bar (formerly Zabornianka), 5173 South Archer. Police responding to a "shots fired" call at midnight Monday, August 19 found three people bleeding from gunshot wounds: a 23-year-old Orland Hills man, a 27-year-old Clearing woman, and a 29-year-old Cicero man employed as a security guard at the bar.

The woman was shot in both legs, the security guard was shot in the neck, and the other man was hit in the right leg. All three were treated by CFD staff and transported to hospitals. Police said that all three are recovering.

The victims, as well as witnesses, identified the shooter and an accomplice as white Hispanic men age 20-29, driving a black SUV with tinted windows.

The offenders reportedly left the bar after getting into an argument with at least one of the victims. They returned a short time later, firing from their vehicle and the speeding away west on Archer.

An armed thug robbed the GameStop store at 5143 South Pulaski at 7:00 p.m. Sunday,

August 18. The store had just closed for the day when an employee--a 19-year-old Brighton Park man--walked in front to retrieve a case of video games. At that point, the offender forced him back inside the store and flashed a blue-steel hand gun. He ordered another employee--a 36-year-old Clearing woman--to empty the cash register. She did, and surrendered about $450 cash.

The criminal then bolted from the store, jumping into an older green sedan and speeding away north on Pulaski. The robber is described as a black man age 25-35, 5'10 to 6'0 and 160-175 pounds, brown eyes, black hair, dark complexion, wearing a black baseball cap, white t-shirt and black jeans.

A burglar alarm appears to have thwarted a criminal who broke into H. Dog, 5341 South

Archer. Police responding to a tripped alarm at 3:28 a.m. Monday, August 19 said they discovered a door lock punched out. The owner arrived a while later and said that nothing appeared to have been stolen.

A 17-year-old gangbanger from Cicero was arrested on a weapons charge after police reportedly found a pistol and rounds of ammunition wrapped up in a white sock in the trunk of a car he was in.

Alejandro Ocampo is scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 48, 155 West 51^st Street, on Thursday, August 22.

According to police, Ocampo and two others—Jose Zamora, 24, of Cicero and Joshua Lopez, 20, of Berwyn were seated in a parked Mitsubishi near 71^st and Lawndale at about 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 15. Police said that as they approached the car, the three slouched down in an apparent effort to hide themselves.

A search of the vehicle reportedly yielded the gun and ammunition. Police that Ocampo claimed ownership of the gun. Since all three are admitted gang members, according to police, Zamora and Lopez were charged with violating the terms of probation/parole (in which they prohibited from contact with gang members). Their court date is Thursday, September 26 in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 34, 155 West 51^st Street.

A 16-year-old Summit boy told police that he was robbed of a cell phone at 6300 South Narragansett at 3:30 p.m. Monday, August 19. The boy said he was trying to sell the broken phone via craigslist and was supposed to meet a prospective buyer at the location. Once the buyer had the phone in his hands, however, he pulled a knife and announced that he was taking it without paying. He then reportedly pedaled away on an orange Mongoose bicycle. The victim told police he knows the offender and gave a description.

A 14-year-old West Lawn girl told police she was robbed of her purse and cell phone while she was walked down a sidewalk with a friend near 58th and Springfield at 9:00 p.m. Monday, August 19. She said that two white Hispanic girls pulled up in a black Nissan Murano, jumped out, shouted obscenities and hit her with their fists before committing the robbery.

Burglars kicked in a side window of an apartment near 57th and Kenton and stole a laptop computer and an iPad. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 28-year-old woman, when she came home from work at 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 19.

Burglars pried open the service door of a garage near 58th and Kenneth and stole a tile cutter, a tree pruner, a lawn mower, an air compressor, a bicycle and a water pressure monitor. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 34-year-old woman, at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, August 18.

Burglars opened the unlocked service door of a garage near 52nd and Avers and stole a

snow blower, an electric sprayer, a tree trimmer, a tree pruner and a wire cutter. The crime was discovered by the victim, an 84-year-old woman, at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, August 17.

Burglars forced open the overhead door of a garage near 52nd and Kolin and stole a laptop computer and a tool box. They also smashed the passenger window of a 2003 Toyota Sequoia parked inside. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 43-year-old woman, at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 18.

A 60-year-old Skokie man told police he was robbed at the Mobile gas station at 5448 West 55^th Street. He said a robber came up behind him, snatched his cell phone and fled on foot at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, August 13—although he did not report the crime until two days later. The robber is described as a black boy age 15-16, 5’9 and wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

The GRNW honored the Clear-Ridge senior all-star team for a spectacular playoff run that saw them earn the title of best team in the Central United States and then advance to the Senior League World Series tournament in Bangor, Maine.

A 27-year-old Humboldt Park man was arrested for home invasion after he allegedly broke into two apartments in the same building near 47th and Keeler.

Jose Mendoza of 955 North Homan is scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 48, 155 West 51st Street, on Tuesday, August 13.

At about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, Mendoza allegedly cut a screen in a first-floor window, entered the apartment and stole two cell phones from that apartment. After that, he reportedly broke into the building's second-story unit. The tenant, a 47-year-old man, told police that he woke up, spotted Mendoza, chased and fought with him before subduing him until police arrived.

A 41-year-old Scottsdale woman thwarted two robbers when she won a tug of war over the gold chains she was wearing.

The woman told police she was walking in Durkin Park near 85th and Keeler at about 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, August 7 when two thugs pulled up in a black, four-door sedan. They got out and surrounded her, blocking her path.

One of the two lunged at her, yanking on her chains. She held fast, and in the struggle was hit in the face and neck by the criminals. Failing to snatch away the chains, the two got back in the car and sped away.

One is described as a white Hispanic boy or man age 17-20, 5'10 and 160 pounds with short black hair. The other is described as a black boy or man age 17-18, 5'9 and 150 short black hair.

A 26-year-old Archer Heights woman thwarted a burglar when she won a tug of war over a window air conditioner at her apartment near 47th and Karlov.

The woman told police she was at home at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 6 when she heard a noise near a window. She went to investigate and saw a man trying to push a window air conditioner inside the house, apparently so he could then crawl inside.

She pushed the unit back into place, and the would-be burglar continued pushing in until he gave up and fled on foot. He is described as a black man age 18-25, 5'5 to 5'8 and 160 pounds, brown eyes, short black hair and dark complexion.

5849 South Pulaski

Burglars entered the back door of a coin laundry at 5849 South Pulaski but apparently left without stealing anything.

According to a manager at the business, the criminals entered the laundry's office and tried unsuccessfully to remove coin changers that were bolted on a wall. They did damage the wall in the process.

A 24-year-old Sleepy Hollow man told police he was robbed on the street near 48th and Cicero by thugs who took his wallet and $75 cash.

The victim said that at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday, August 10, he was walking south on Cicero when he was propositioned by a prostitute. He declined and started walking east on 48th Street. At the alley just east of Cicero, a car emerged rapidly. The victim had he tried to get out of the way, but grabbed the side of the vehicle and was dragged a few feet.

While on the ground, three men and a woman (the same woman he had just spoken with) emerged from the car (a silver, four-door vehicle) and went through his pockets before getting back in the car and speeding away.

The victim gave only partial descriptions of his attackers. The woman was described as a 24-year-old white Hispanic, black hair and light complexion. One of the others was described as a white Hispanic man age 25, 5'6 and 135 pounds, short black hair and light complexion.

Three men in a garage near 62nd and Komensky were robbed by baseball bat-wielding thugs at 9:35 p.m. Friday, August 9. The victims (41, 49 and 56 years old) told police that the trio pulled up in a green Oldsmobile. They got out, robbed one of the men of his cell phone, hit all of them with bats--causing minor injuries--and got back in their vehicle and sped away east. The offender are described only as white Hispanic men.

An 86-year-old man returned from vacation on Friday, August 9 to find that his garage (near 49th and Kedvale) had been burglarized. The service door had been kicked in. Stolen were a lawnmower, a snow blower and assorted tools.

Burglars broke the locks on the door of a corridor leading to a garage near 57th and Kolin and stole two bicycles. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 35-year-old man, at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, August 8.

Burglars entered an unlocked back window of a home near 77th Place and Kostner and stole two TVs, an iPod and a cell phone. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 41-year-old man, when he came home from work at 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 9.

Burglars entered a garage near 81st and Kilbourn and stole a bicycle. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 20-year-old man, at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 7 when he saw the overhead door half open.

Burglars pried open the back door of a home near 59th and Tripp and stole two TVs, a gold ring, a necklace and $200 cash. The crime was discovered by the victim, a 37-year-old man, when he came home from work at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6.

Burglars entered an apartment near 54th and Lorel and stole a TV, assorted articles of clothing, a laptop computer, seven purses and about $2,000 cash, according to the victim, a 45-year-old man. The crime was discovered at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6. Police said they saw no sign of forced entry.

A 54-year-old West Elsdon man who had left his home near 53rd and Avers for just two hours, came back at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6 to find that burglars had forced open the side door of his garage and stolen a lawn mower, a bicycle, two tool boxes and a 10-gallon tank of compressed air.

Clear-Ridge Historical Society Hosts Screening of Vietnam "Home Front" Film

Our friends at the Clear-Ridge Historical Society have tipped us off to what promises to be

an interesting evening: the screening of a newly (and beautifully) restored print of a 1970 film ("Eight Flags For 99¢") that looks at the Vietnam War through the eyes of the Silent Majority--specifically, in Garfield Ridge.

Mark your calendars for 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 12 and head over to the Garfield Ridge Branch Library, 6348 South Archer. Parking at the library is tight (as usual), so please arrive a little early.

The screening is open to the public. Admission is free, although donations are accepted.

If you remember Father Dubi from his time in the neighborhood (he was also known citywide for his anti-racism and environmental activism), you'll want to stop by and say hello.

Chicago Film Archives, The Garfield Ridge Library and the Clear-Ridge Historical Society invite you to a special premiere of this newly restored film ("8 FLAGS FOR 99 CENTS") about the home front during the Vietnam War. Father Leonard Dubi, who appears in the film, will be on hand at the screening to discuss the film.

"8 FLAGS FOR 99 CENTS" (1970, Mike Gray Associates, Chuck Olin, Joel Katz) was produced in response to President Nixon’s famous November, 1969 speech when he

contrasted the unlawful and vocal anti-war protesters to the respectful “silent majority” who were in favor of remaining in Vietnam to fight communism. This film explores the thoughts and opinions of the “silent majority” represented by the folks living in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood on the Southwest Side of Chicago.

The commentary that arose from the Garfield Ridge community turned the filmmakers’ expectations (as well as conventional wisdom of the times) on its head. Expecting to record pro-war and pro-government slogans and sentiments, the filmmakers were caught somewhat off guard by the thoughtful, nuanced, and distressed analysis articulated by those that were interviewed and recorded. Contractors, firemen, mothers, fathers, barbers, Vietnam vets and clerks have varied and layered thoughts on America’s involvement in the war. One 20 year-old store clerk is most moving as she speaks with composure yet deep anxiety about the uncertain future her peer group is facing. Residents of all ages speak to the war in this film with very little evidence of hostility between generations, shattering another iconic image of those politically tumultuous times.

8 FLAGS FOR 99 CENTS scrambles stereotypical portraits from an era in American history that is remembered for its theatrical, abundantly vocal and sometimes violent unrest. This film presents an alternative and quieter picture of a community’s anguish in the face of an unpopular war. Residing in the very heart of middle America, 8 FLAGS FOR 99 CENTS signals the certain demise of a post WWII culture.

National Night Out Against Crime

Neighbors gather at 62nd and Melvina (above) on Tuesday evening, just before a prayer service (below) starts to honor the memory of two local girls killed in a gang-related shooting in 1995.

The service was part of the Clearing Night Force's observance of National Night Out, an annual event designed to get law-abiding citizens out of their houses and join forces to combat crime. Following the service was a motorcade through the streets of Clearing.

An NNO celebration for the entire Eighth District, which attracted more than 700 men, women and children, was held Tuesday at West Lawn Park.

An alert neighbor who said something when she saw something helped foil an apparent burglary of her neighbor's home near 58th and Narragansett.

Four Brighton Park residents were arrested and charged with the crime: Jennifer Frieri, 32, Jacklyn Frieri, 21, and Jasmine Ramirez, 20, all of the same address near 42nd and Washtenaw; and Juan Avila, 22, of 43rd and Maplewood.

They are all scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 48, 155 West 51st Street, on Thursday, August 8, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

saw people taking a TV and other items out of her neighbor's home, police said. She gave a description of the car they loaded and fled in--a white Chevy Caprice with temporary license tags, headed south on Narragansett.

Police on patrol at about 9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 1 spotted a car matching the description and curbed it near the southwest corner of Midway Airport, at about 6251 South Central. The driver of the car, Jennifer Frieri, was found driving without a valid driver's license and was placed into custody. The other three were detained, pending a search of the car, which yielded two TVs, a stun gun, two scales, an iPod, a socket set, a digital picture

frame, a gold watch, a gold ring with diamonds, and other items.

The neighbor was transported by police to 63rd and Central, where she positively identified the car and its occupants, police reported. They added that a 15-year-old boy also witnessed the scene on Narragansett.

The owner of the home burglarized, a 48-year-old man, was contacted. He came home and attempted to determine what had been stolen from his house. He then was transported to 63rd and Central, where he identified the items in the car as his. They were all returned to

him, except a religious medallion (with depictions of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary) which was missing. Police said they later found the medallion being worn by Ramirez.

The car was impounded.

A 57-year-old pizza delivery driver returning to the back entrance of Villa Rosa Pizza, 5786 South Archer, foiled an armed robber by simply refusing to hand over his wallet.

The man told police that he was accosted by a would-be robber with a pistol at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30. "Give me your wallet," the thug demanded. "No," the employee replied and walked into the pizzeria. In response, the unsuccessful robber jumped in a dark-colored vehicle and sped away east through the alley. He is described as a white Hispanic man age 30-35, 5'6 to 5'9 and 150-170 pounds, short black hair, light complexion, wearing a white baseball cap, dark green shirt and dark blue pants.

An 89-year-old West Elsdon man told police that he was robbed in his garage near 57th and Kolmar at about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 30. The man said he had just gotten out of his car when he was hit from behind. He fell to the ground, and the attacker went though his pants pockets.

Stolen was the victim's wallet, which contained a credit card, a driver's license and a military veteran's ID card. The man refused medical treatment and said he did not get a look at the criminal.

A 39-year-old man looking out a window at his home near 65th and Keeler told police he saw a burglar riding a bike away from his garage and carrying the victim's leaf blower.
