Crime News Update

Editor's note: The crime news reported by the Southwest Chicago Post---taken directly from Chicago Police Department incident reports---is not by any means an exhaustive catalogue of all crime reported in the Chicago Lawn (8th) District. For example, it typically does not include news of crimes committed in the eastern and southern sectors of the district---because the Southwest Chicago Post's coverage area is primarily the neighborhoods that border Midway Airport and secondarily because including the relatively large volume of crime news from elsewhere in the district would be a logistical challenge. We make this note to offer a little helpful perspective and remind everyone that while crime is definitely a concern in all parts of the district (as it always has been), crime remains relatively low overall in Sector 1. May all of us work together diligently to keep it that way. May all of us also remember that a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

A 21-year-old West Elsdon man described by police as a gangbanger was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery after he allegedly threatened his 18-year-old girlfriend with a loaded hand gun and punched her in the face during an argument.

Brian Magdelano of 58th and Lawndale is scheduled to answer charges on Friday, March 22 in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 48, 151 West 51st Street.

According to police, the incident occurred at 2:05 a.m. Saturday, March 16 in the couple's apartment. When police arrived, the victim handed over the gun, a 357-caliber blue-steel pistol with 10 live rounds.

Magdelano was arrested. The victim refused medical treatment.

A 17-year-old Back of the Yards resident was arrested by police and charged with burglary after he allegedly broke into a home near 50th and Lawler.

Falandis T. Russell of 49th and Throop is scheduled to answer charges on Friday, March 22 in Cook County Circuit Court Branch 48, 151 West 51st Street.

According to the victims, three elderly women (ages 65, 75 and 83), the incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 15. They heard a loud knocking at the front door and windows. One of the three said she spotted a man through the door's peephole but refused to open the door.

They then said they heard a loud noise near the back of the house and claimed to see Russell climbing through a window. One yelled, and the offender backed out and ran away.

The women called 911. Police combing the area spotted Russell in front of 4551 South Leclaire. Since he matched the description given by the women, he was apprehended and brought to the home. He was positively identified by the victims and arrested.

One of the victims said she had seen Russell lurking about in her gangway the previous Saturday.

A 27-year-old man from suburban Cicero told police that he was robbed at gunpoint on the street near 55th and Kilbourn at 1:25 p.m. Friday, March 15.

He told police that the previous day, his vehicle had been rear-ended in traffic on a West Side street. The woman driving the car allegedly told him she was driving uninsured but would meet him on Friday at 4500 West 55th Street to discuss making amends. The victim gave no indication to police why a location in West Elsdon was chosen.

The victim claimed that the woman, who he said is named Jydian Temple, and a man drove to 55th and Kilbourn in a two-door green Chevy Cavalier. The man got out, snatched insurance papers from the victim, pointed a hand gun at him and stole his cell phone before jumping back in the car and speeding away.

The offender is described as a black man age 28-35, 6'0 to 6'2 and 250-275 pounds, brown eyes, black hair, dark complexion, wearing a Carhart jacket, dark blue jeans and Timberland boots.

A trucker driving for a Hebron, Indiana company told police he was hit on the back of the head and robbed as he was getting into his truck near 47th and Central Park at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13.

He said he did not see the attacker and was knocked unconscious. When he came to, he was missing $14 cash.

Burglars removed the side window of a garage near 45th and Knox and stole a potbelly stove and an aluminum canoe.

The crime was discovered by the victim, an 80-year-old woman, when she took out the garbage at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14.

Burglars kicked in the side door of a home near 86th and Keeler and stole $2,000 cash and assorted gold jewelry worth an estimated $7,000.

The crime was discovered by the victims, a 37-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, at 5:40 p.m. Thursday, March 14.

Burglars kicked in the service door of a garage near 47th and Lamon, smashed the side windows of a Chevy S10 pickup truck inside and stole $20 cash and an automatic garage door opener.

The crime was discovered by the victim, a 39-year-old man, at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 13.
